"What the heck are camel spiders? I decided to look them up so that I might be prepared for the exotic creatures of the Gobi desert. This is what I found:
• They call them camel spiders because they eat the stomachs of camels.
• They attach themselves to the under belly of camels and lay eggs under the skin.
• They can traverse desert sand at speeds up to 25 miles per hour, making screaming noises as they run.
• They can jump 4 to 6 feet straight up in the air.
• They will chase you down like a hungry lion.
• If they bite you, the flesh and muscle fall off, leaving a hole.
• They are venomous, and their venom contains a powerful anesthetic that numbs their victims (thus allowing them to gnaw away at living, immobilized animals without being noticed).

These are all myths. They had me freaked out for a minute. Everyone loves monster stories don’t they? The reality is:
The camel spider isn’t really a spider but it is not a scorpion either. It is related to BOTH the spiders and the scorpions, and it belongs to its own group of animals. This large arachnid looks like a huge hairy spider and is unique to the desert. It can be as long as 6 inches across!

Camel spiders like to live in barren parts of the desert far away from humans. Most of the time camel spiders hide in their burrows, coming out only when they’re hungry. (Hungry for Ultrarunners?)
So when they do come out at night to feed, they are very ferocious and dangerous. What spooks so many people is that the camel spider seeks out shadows, so if your walking or running the camel spider will actually follow your shadow. Their top speed is 10 MPH or 16km/h. This speediness leads to people imagining that the spider is screaming while chasing them! (You mean the human is screaming, right?)
Because they run so fast and stay in your shadow, you might think they are chasing you but in fact, they are simply staying out of the light.
The next time you are walking and notice a massive spider following you, don’t get to excited, it’s just you standard camel spider seeking shelter. (Hello ugly hairy huge spider. No I don’t mind if you share my shadow – ya right!)
The camel spider is not dangerous and typically does not bite humans unless it is on accident or they feel threatened (What if I accidentally pee on one?), as is the case with other spiders. L
The reason behind the name ‘camel spiders’ is simply because they are found in the desert. A Camel Spider is also known as wind scorpion, sun spider, and wind spider. "
